Two home batteries can look nearly identical on a spec sheet, similar capacity, similar price, similar warranty, and still differ enormously in how they behave in the one scenario nobody wants to think about: a battery fire. A certification most homeowners have never heard of is what actually distinguishes them.

What the Testing Actually Measures

UL 9540A is a fire testing standard that measures what happens when a lithium battery cell fails and starts a chain reaction, called thermal runaway, where one failing cell heats its neighbors enough to fail too. The test measures how far that reaction can spread, how much heat and gas it releases, and whether a battery's internal design and enclosure can contain or slow that spread rather than letting it cascade.

This isn't an abstract engineering detail. The results directly determine practical installation rules, like how far a battery has to be placed from a wall, a window, or another battery unit, and whether it can be installed inside a garage versus needing to be outside the home entirely. A battery system with strong UL 9540A test results can sometimes be installed closer to a structure than one without that data, because the manufacturer has demonstrated the risk is genuinely lower.

As of 2026, fire codes have tightened further. The national fire safety standard that governs battery installations now requires more rigorous hazard analysis and, for many installations, large-scale fire testing data, not just cell-level testing. That's raised the bar for what "certified" actually means, and it's part of why the specific test results behind a battery's paperwork matter more than the certification label alone.

The Hardware Stack:

Tesla Powerwall 3: A home battery marketed with UL 9540 listing as part of its standard installation documentation.
Enphase IQ Battery 5P: A modular battery system built to meet UL 9540 certification requirements for residential installations.
FranklinWH aPower: A whole-home battery system certified to UL 9540 standards for residential energy storage.

My name is Porter Stansberry.

I'm the founder of one of the largest independent financial research firms in the world. Over the last 30 years we've helped hundreds of thousands of Americans navigate almost every major economic cycle.

We've been on the forefront of every big financial story – from the collapse of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to the rise of Bitcoin, the COVID inflation surge, and the artificial intelligence revolution.

But today, I need to expose a story the likes of which we haven't seen in half a century.

In fact, the last – and only – time this happened was 1974. A secret deal struck in a Saudi desert that quietly determined the financial fate of an entire generation of Americans.

It created extraordinary wealth for some, while casting millions more into relative poverty.

Now, 52 years later, it's happening again.

And as you'll see, the aftershock of this event could reset not just your personal wealth, but the entire foundation of the U.S. dollar.

How you save, how you invest, how you protect everything you've built… it's all being reshaped by what Fortune calls "the biggest change to the world's relationship with the dollar" in a generation.

Yet almost nobody is prepared for it.

So if you've been watching the chaos of the past year unfold, struggling to make sense of it all – you're about to get the answers you've been searching for.

Everything from the government taking direct equity stakes in tiny mining companies… to Trump's obsession with Greenland… his strange deals with Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, Sam Altman and Mark Zuckerberg… the re-opening of shuttered nuclear plants… and a $12 billion stockpile of obscure metals most Americans have never heard of…

It's all deeply and inexorably connected to an inescapable fact no-one has prepared you for:

Trump is replacing the dollar.

His shocking money reset has bypassed all conventional channels – enacted instead through a series of executive orders, bi-lateral deals and a landmark treaty signed by 13 nations in December 2025 (barely reported in the press) called Pax Silica.

You need to know that the financial decisions you make in the face of Trump's New Dollar could dictate whether you're enriched, or quietly impoverished by the seismic shift already underway.

The stocks to buy. The assets to avoid. And the critical moves our research indicates you should make to ensure you and your family end up on the right side of this once-in-a-generation wealth divide…

It's all laid out here for you in my important new briefing.

Good investing,

Vulnerability Score

No fire test data: A battery without published large-scale fire test results gives an installer less information to work with when determining safe placement, which can mean more conservative, and more expensive, installation requirements.

No spacing compliance: Installing a battery closer to a home than its certification allows isn't just a code violation, it defeats the purpose of the testing that determined that distance in the first place.

No awareness of the difference: Two batteries with the same UL 9540 label can still have different large-scale test results behind them, a distinction most homeowners never ask their installer about.

What This Means When Comparing Battery Quotes

None of this means every home battery on the market today is unsafe, the vast majority of installed systems perform exactly as intended for their entire service life. But when comparing quotes from different manufacturers, the certification paperwork behind a battery is worth asking about directly, not just the capacity and price on the sales sheet.

An installer who can speak clearly about a battery's UL 9540A test results and the placement rules that follow from them is generally a good sign that the system, and the installation, are being taken seriously.
