Enphase introduced an AI energy management platform that coordinates its battery systems with variable electricity rates and compatible water heaters and EV chargers, letting the software manage timing across multiple devices rather than just the battery in isolation. Other companies have introduced similar systems positioning the software as a kind of energy "autopilot" sitting between solar generation, battery storage, connected appliances, and the grid. Industry estimates suggest AI-powered energy management is on track to be included in a majority of new solar-and-storage installations this year, a rapid shift from where the market stood just a couple of years ago.

The practical benefit shows up as real savings without a homeowner needing to think about it. On a home with time-of-use utility rates, for example, the software can automatically ensure the battery is full and ready right before the most expensive pricing window begins, rather than relying on a fixed daily schedule that might miss the actual timing of peak rates on a given day.

For anyone shopping for a new system, it's worth asking directly what the energy management software actually optimizes for and whether it factors in an existing time-of-use rate plan.
