# Your Next Home Battery Might Have Once Been Inside an EV

An EV battery that's no longer strong enough to power a car reliably still typically has most of its useful life left in it. A growing industry is now taking those retired packs and giving them a second job sitting quietly in someone's garage as home backup power.

### Why a "Worn Out" EV Battery Still Has Plenty Left

An EV battery is usually retired from vehicle use once it drops to somewhere around 70 to 80 percent of its original capacity, not because it's failed, but because that capacity loss meaningfully affects a car's range in a way drivers notice. That same battery, though, is still holding the large majority of its original energy storage, more than enough for the steadier, less demanding job of backing up a home.

Globally, more than 120 gigawatt-hours of EV batteries are expected to reach the end of their vehicle life in 2026, and a growing share of that supply is being redirected into home storage, commercial backup, and grid services rather than heading straight to recycling. A second-life project typically gives a battery pack another five to ten years of useful service before it eventually does get recycled, which delays a resource-intensive process and reduces the total lifecycle footprint of the materials inside it.

The economics aren't automatically better than buying a new battery, prices for new residential battery cells have fallen enough that a fresh battery is often competitively priced. Second-life batteries tend to make the most sense in specific situations: markets with high electricity prices, a reliable local supply of retired packs, and use cases that don't require the same guaranteed uptime as a brand-new system. Repurposed batteries used for home storage now also fall under a specific safety standard, UL 1974, and the 2026 National Electrical Code added dedicated provisions covering how they need to be installed.

For most homeowners today, a new residential battery is still the simpler, more predictable choice, with clearer warranties and more established installer networks. But second-life battery storage is a legitimate, growing option worth knowing about, particularly in regions where retired EV packs are locally available and installers are experienced with the repurposing process.

Anyone considering a second-life system should ask directly about the UL 1974 certification, the battery's original use history, and the warranty terms, since those three things matter more for a repurposed battery than they do for a new one.
