# Why Your Lights Blink Three Times Before an Outage

The lights dip, come back, dip again, come back, dip a third time, and then the house goes dark. That sequence is not the grid failing in stages. It is a specific device on a specific pole running a test, and the test has a fixed number of attempts.

Robert Kiyosaki just called out a pattern he's seen his entire investing life:

"Many 'speculators' buy at the TOP then selling at the BOTTOM."

Think about it. When silver was at $118, everyone was bullish.

The headlines were glowing. People were piling in.

Now silver is at $56 — down 52% — and those same people are panicking.

Selling. Running for the exits. They bought high. They're selling low. That's not investing. That's speculation. And it's a guaranteed way to lose money.

Here's what Robert is doing instead: "During this last 'retracement' or 'crash' I bought more gold and silver."

He's buying low. While everyone else sells. That's what separates the rich from the broke. The rich see crashes as sales. The broke see crashes as disasters.

Which one are you?

The same business model that's outperformed physical silver in every bull market since 1980.

Buy high, sell low = stay broke.
Buy low, hold = get rich.

Your choice.

### What a Recloser Is Actually Doing

A recloser is a circuit breaker mounted on a distribution line, and it exists because most trouble on an overhead line is temporary. A branch swings into a conductor in a gust. A squirrel bridges two phases. Lightning flashes over an insulator. In every one of those cases the fault clears itself the instant the current stops, and the line is perfectly healthy a second later.

So the recloser opens, waits, and closes again. If the fault is gone, service continues and the customer sees a blink. If the fault is still there, it opens again and repeats. Most units are set for three attempts, and after the third the recloser locks out and stays open until a crew finds the cause and resets it manually.

That is why the blinks come in a cluster and why the last one is different. The first two are the system checking whether the problem solved itself. The one that does not come back is the system concluding it did not.

Reading the pattern is useful. Repeated blinks with no outage usually mean vegetation or wildlife contact somewhere upstream, and they tend to cluster in wind. A single clean blink on a clear day more often points to a switching operation. Blinks that only happen when a large motor starts nearby are a different problem entirely, one that lives inside your own service rather than on the line.

The part that catches homeowners out is what a blink does to equipment. A momentary interruption is far too short to register as an outage on a utility report, but it is long enough to reboot a computer, reset a well pump controller, drop a network connection, and restart the clock on every appliance in the kitchen. A house can experience dozens of these in a year and never appear in an outage statistic.

**The Hardware Stack:**

**Ting by Whisker Labs:** A plug-in sensor that monitors the electrical waveform in a home and flags both in-house faults and disturbances arriving from the line.

**Sense Home Energy Monitor:** Logs voltage and interruptions at the panel, which turns a vague sense of frequent blinking into a dated record.

**APC Back-UPS Pro:** A battery backup for the small loads that a blink actually disrupts, meaning routers, computers, and control boards rather than the whole house.

### Vulnerability Score

**Unrecorded events:** Momentary interruptions are tracked separately from outages and often not at all for an individual address, so a household experiencing many of them has no evidence to raise with the utility.

**Control boards:** Modern furnaces, well pumps, and appliances all run on electronics that need to reboot after a blink, and some require a manual reset before they resume.

**Data and connectivity:** A blink takes down a router and modem instantly, so home internet, cameras, and any monitoring that depends on them go offline for the minutes it takes to reconnect.

### What This Changes About Backup Planning

The useful conclusion is that outage backup and blink protection are two different purchases. A whole-home battery or generator is sized for hours of runtime and handles the long events. It does not necessarily solve a blink, because the transfer itself takes a moment and some equipment reboots anyway.

The cheap fix for blinks is small and local. A modest uninterruptible power supply on the network gear and the furnace control board costs very little and eliminates most of the annoyance. If the blinks are frequent enough to be a pattern, logging them gives the utility something concrete to act on, and tree trimming or a protection setting change on that circuit is usually the answer rather than anything you buy.
