The typical US household now loses power for roughly eight hours a year, the worst annual total in more than a decade. The number itself isn't dramatic on its own, but the trend behind it, and what's actually driving it, tells a clearer story about why more homeowners are treating backup power as routine rather than optional.

### What's Actually Behind the Numbers

Weather is by far the dominant cause of major outages, responsible for the large majority of significant events tracked by federal energy data, with aging equipment, wildfires, and other causes making up the rest. What's changed isn't so much how often storms happen, it's how severe the big ones are getting and how strained the equipment responding to them already is.  
  
The clearest sign is in what utilities call major event days, outages affecting 50,000 or more customers at once. Those events have roughly tripled in frequency over the past two decades, and the average duration of a major weather-driven outage has climbed as well, nearly doubling in recent years compared with the decade before. Combined with the transformer and equipment shortages already slowing repair timelines industry-wide, an outage today is more likely to be both longer and to affect more of a region at once than an equivalent event would have a decade ago.  
  
None of this means a house is more likely to lose power on an ordinary day, most interruptions are still brief and routine. But the tail end of the distribution, the big, disruptive, multi-day events, is where the real change is happening, and that's exactly the scenario a battery or generator is built to cover.

No regional context: A homeowner who hasn't checked recent local outage history may be underestimating how often multi-day, weather-driven events actually happen in their specific utility territory.  
No repair-time buffer: Given current transformer and equipment shortages, assuming a fast utility repair time is now a riskier assumption than it used to be.

### What This Means for Anyone Weighing Backup Power

This isn't a case for alarm, it's a case for matching the backup plan to what outages actually look like today rather than what they looked like a decade ago. A shorter outage a home used to shrug off might now stretch several days longer during a major weather event.
