# When a Neighborhood Becomes Its Own Backup Grid

A handful of communities around the country have started building something that used to only exist at the scale of a hospital or a military base: a small local grid that can disconnect from the wider utility system and keep running entirely on its own. These community microgrids are showing up in places that have been through serious outages before, and they're changing what resilience looks like at the neighborhood level rather than just the single-home level.

### How a Microgrid Actually Works

A community microgrid combines local solar generation, battery storage, and smart controls so a defined area, a group of homes, a fire station, a community center, can keep operating even when the surrounding regional grid goes down. In New Orleans, a project called Community Lighthouse has installed solar-plus-storage microgrids at more than a dozen community centers and churches across the city, built specifically in response to the extended outages the region experienced after major hurricanes. In Colorado, a state grant program has funded dozens of microgrid projects, including ones supporting rural electric cooperatives and fire stations that need to stay operational during wildfire season.  
  
What makes these systems different from a single home battery is coordination at scale. Rather than one household managing its own backup power, a microgrid can prioritize which buildings and services matter most during an extended outage, a cooling or charging center, emergency services, a pharmacy, and keep those specific points running for days rather than hours. Some newer projects, like one in the Bay Area, are also structured to function as a virtual power plant during normal conditions, feeding stored solar power back to the utility for compensation when it isn't needed locally.  
  
For an individual homeowner, a community microgrid usually isn't something to install personally, it requires municipal, utility, or nonprofit coordination. But it's a meaningful sign of where local resilience planning is heading, and it's worth knowing whether a community center

Tesla Powerwall: Frequently used as the battery component in smaller-scale community and campus microgrid deployments.

### Vulnerability Score

No local resilience hub: A neighborhood without a known community microgrid or resilience center has no fallback location if home backup power runs out during an extended outage.  
No awareness of nearby resources: Many of these projects exist quietly at community centers or fire stations, and residents often don't know a site near them is equipped to stay powered.  
No coordination between homes: Individual home batteries operate in isolation without the shared prioritization a microgrid provides, which matters most during a widespread, multi-day event.

### What This Means for a Community, Not Just a Home

Home batteries and generators solve for an individual household's outage risk, but they don't address what happens to an entire neighborhood during a severe, prolonged event. Community microgrids are one of the more promising answers to that gap, and they're increasingly funded through state grant programs rather than requiring a city to cover the full cost alone.

For homeowners, the practical takeaway is simple: it's worth finding out whether a local community center, school, or fire station has been equipped this way, since that information becomes genuinely useful during the exact kind of event a personal battery might not fully cover.
