Houses run on alternating current. Batteries store direct current. Every system therefore has to convert, and the only question is how many times. In a DC-coupled system, one hybrid inverter handles everything. Panel output goes straight into the battery as DC, and converts to AC once on its way into the house. Two conversions total when energy is stored and used. In an AC-coupled system, the existing solar inverter converts panel output to AC as it always did. A second inverter attached to the battery converts that AC back to DC for storage, then back to AC again on the way out. Three conversions for stored energy. Each conversion costs a little efficiency, so DC coupling is modestly more efficient on paper and uses one piece of equipment instead of two. That makes it the usual choice when panels and battery go in together. Retrofits usually go the other way, and for a practical reason rather than a technical one. Rewiring an existing array to route its DC output through a new hybrid inverter means touching the roof, the conduit, and the inverter that is currently working. AC coupling leaves the existing solar system entirely alone and simply adds a battery with its own inverter downstream. Nothing on the roof changes. There is one case where the retrofit math shifts. If the existing solar inverter is near the end of its life anyway, which for a string inverter is commonly somewhere past the ten-year mark, then replacing it with a hybrid unit means you are buying an inverter you needed regardless and getting the DC-coupled configuration as part of the deal. Microinverters change the question again. A roof running microinverters is already producing AC at each panel, so AC coupling is effectively the only sensible path. **The Hardware Stack:** - **Tesla Powerwall 3:** A DC-coupled system with the solar inverter built in, which suits a new installation or a retrofit where the old inverter is being replaced anyway. - **Enphase IQ Battery 5P:** An AC-coupled battery designed to sit alongside an existing microinverter array without changing anything on the roof. - **SolarEdge Home Battery:** A DC-coupled option within the SolarEdge ecosystem, relevant when the existing system is already SolarEdge optimizers. - **FranklinWH aPower 2:** An AC-coupled whole-home battery that works with an existing array regardless of who made the original inverter. ### Vulnerability Score - **Retrofit surprise:** A quote that assumes DC coupling on an existing array can include roof and conduit work that a homeowner did not expect, and it may require replacing a functioning inverter. - **Efficiency versus disruption:** The efficiency advantage of DC coupling is real but modest, and on a retrofit it is often outweighed by the cost and risk of rewiring a working system. - **Equipment lock-in:** Both approaches tie the battery to a particular manufacturer's ecosystem to some degree, which shapes what can be added or replaced later. ### What to Ask Before Signing When a battery quote arrives for an existing solar system, ask which coupling it assumes and what happens to the current inverter. If the answer is that the existing inverter stays and the battery arrives with its own, that is an AC-coupled retrofit and the roof is untouched. If the answer involves a new hybrid inverter, ask what that does to the existing equipment warranty and whether the old inverter was due for replacement anyway. Neither answer is wrong.
