# The Water Heater That Quietly Works Like a Battery

A tank of hot water is, in a sense, stored energy. A newer generation of heat pump water heaters is built to take that idea seriously, storing extra heat during cheap or low-demand hours so the home draws less power exactly when the grid needs it most.

### Why a Water Heater Makes an Unusually Good Grid Partner

A heat pump water heater already works differently from a standard electric model. Instead of using resistive heating elements to generate heat directly, which is straightforward but power-hungry, it moves existing heat from the surrounding air into the water tank, similar to how a refrigerator works in reverse. That alone makes it two to three times more efficient than a conventional electric water heater.

The grid-connected versions take this further. Most include a small industry-standard port that lets a utility or a smart home system send a signal telling the water heater when to run and when to hold off, without the homeowner noticing any difference in hot water availability. Because a full tank of hot water can sit for hours without needing to be reheated, the water heater can shift almost all of its energy use into whatever window is cheapest or least stressful for the grid, essentially using the tank itself as thermal storage.

For a homeowner, that translates into two separate benefits that don't require any behavior change. The unit uses meaningfully less electricity than a standard water heater to begin with, and in areas with demand response programs, enrolling it can mean a modest ongoing bill credit for letting a utility shift its schedule during periods of high grid demand.

No thermal storage: A standard electric water heater has no way to shift when it draws power, so it runs whenever the tank calls for heat, regardless of grid conditions.

No demand response port: Without a compatible communication port, a water heater can't participate in a utility program even if the homeowner wanted to enroll it.
