This launch will happen before the end of this year. --- ## What the Rule Actually Reserves NEC 110.26 defines working space in three dimensions and all three get violated routinely. Depth is the one people know: for a normal residential panel at 120 or 240 volts, three feet of clear space in front, measured from the live parts or the enclosure front. Width is at least thirty inches, or the width of the equipment if that is greater, and the panel does not have to be centred in it. Height runs from the floor to six and a half feet, or the height of the equipment if taller. There is a fourth requirement that catches more installations than the others combined. The dedicated equipment space is the footprint of the panel extended upward, from the floor to six feet above the panel or to the structural ceiling, whichever comes first, and it is reserved for electrical equipment only. Plumbing, ducts, and anything that might leak are not allowed to pass through it. The reason behind all of this is simple. Somebody has to be able to stand in front of that panel, see what they are doing, open the door fully, and get out quickly if something goes wrong. A panel reachable only by stepping over boxes is a panel that will be worked on badly. The practical consequences arrive at the worst moments. An inspector can fail a job for a clearance violation that has nothing to do with the work being inspected. An installer can decline to open a panel surrounded by storage. And during an outage, the breaker you need is behind whatever has accumulated since the last time anyone looked. Two specific arrangements cause most of the trouble in houses. The first is a panel in a closet that has become a closet again. The second is a panel on a basement or garage wall that has grown shelving on either side, which is usually fine on width but blocks the door from opening a full ninety degrees. The Hardware Stack: Square D QO Load Center: A standard residential panel whose enclosure dimensions set the width and dedicated space the rule reserves. Leviton Load Center: An alternative panel line, relevant because a deeper enclosure changes where the three feet is measured from. Lutron Occupancy Sensor Switch: A simple way to get reliable light at a panel, since working space is useless if nobody can see the breaker labels. ### Vulnerability Score Blocked access: A panel behind storage cannot be operated quickly during a fault or an outage, which is the exact situation the clearance exists for. Failed inspection: A clearance violation can hold up an unrelated permit, so a battery or charger project stalls on a condition that has existed for years. Hidden deterioration: A panel nobody can stand in front of is a panel nobody inspects, so corrosion, loose lugs, and heat damage go unnoticed. ### Fifteen Minutes With a Tape Measure Go and look at your panel. Measure three feet straight out from its face and thirty inches across, and see what is inside that box of air. Then open the door and check that it swings fully without hitting a shelf or a wall. Then look up. The space directly above the panel, up to six feet or the ceiling, should have nothing but electrical conduit in it. A water line or a duct crossing that zone is a real finding, and it is much cheaper to reroute during other work than to discover during an inspection.
