Five issues were named. Operators were told to streamline how large-load applications are studied, including consideration of alternative transmission technologies rather than defaulting to new lines. They were told to make costs transparent and to prevent cost-shifting onto other ratepayers. They were told to address co-location and behind-the-meter generation, meaning a data center that builds its own power plant on site. They were told to create transmission service for large loads willing to be curtailed. And they were told to fix how they study facilities serving nearby large loads. The backdrop is a demand curve that changed shape. **US electricity demand was essentially flat for close to two decades.** Then, over about two years, data center development pushed load growth forecasts up sharply, and grid operators found themselves planning for additions the size of small cities. Two pieces of this matter for anyone thinking about their own supply. The first is cost allocation. FERC is explicitly pushing for agreements where the large customer bears the transmission upgrade costs it causes, rather than spreading them across every residential bill in the territory. **That is the affordability question, and it is not settled yet.** The second is flexibility. FERC acknowledged that load which can be curtailed avoids expensive build-out, and directed operators to create services for it. Practically, that means the system will be run closer to its limits than it has been historically, with flexible demand absorbing the difference instead of spare capacity. ### The Hardware Stack **Sense Home Energy Monitor:** Circuit-level monitoring that shows what a house actually draws through the day, which is the starting point for any load decision. **Emporia Vue:** A lower-cost whole-panel monitor with per-circuit sensors, commonly used to identify peak-hour drivers before buying anything larger. **Generac PWRcell:** A modular home battery and inverter system sized for whole-home or partial-home backup, with expandable capacity. ### Vulnerability Score **No visibility:** A home without monitoring cannot tell which loads land on peak hours, which is the information every rate change is about to make more valuable. **Rate exposure:** Households on standard tariffs absorb whatever cost allocation their regulator lands on, with no mechanism to shift consumption away from the expensive hours. **Zero ride-through:** A home with no storage has no ability to sit out a tight period on the grid, whether that period is an outage or simply an expensive afternoon. ### What This Means at the House Level None of this is a reason for urgency. The grid is not failing, and regulators moving on interconnection rules is a sign the system is being managed, not abandoned. What it does suggest is that the price and timing of electricity are going to get more variable in a lot of territories over the next several years, and that flexibility on the demand side is being deliberately rewarded. **The cheapest version of that flexibility is knowing what your house draws and when.** A monitor costs a few hundred dollars and answers that question in a month.
